Man critical after 5-storey plunge

2012-05-11 07:38

Johannesburg - A man was seriously injured after he fell from a fifth-storey window in Sandton, Johannesburg early on Friday morning, paramedics said.

"The paramedics arrived to find him lying on the ground with witnesses explaining that the man's apartment had also been engulfed in flames," ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said.

After a fall from that height paramedics were shocked to find the 28-year-old man alive at 03:30, Jackson said.

"Paramedics placed him on life saving equipment and treated him for his injuries which included multiple broken bones, internal injuries and a severe head injury."

He was transported to the Charoltte Maxeke Academic Hospital where he remained in a critical condition, Jackson said.

Jackson said the reason why the man jumped or fell from the window would be investigated.

When will people learn we have fire escapes for a reason... Windows are not fire escapes!!! And the higher you are the harder the fall. He chose to jump instead of melt either one can/ could have killed him.... Some people really need to start using what God gave them... Their BRAINS!!!!

Clearly he wasnt trying to escape 4rm the fire...The fool was just trying to commit suicide..unfortunately the paramedics got der in time to save him. Next he should try to be alittle creative.

This isn't new york city, where fire escapes are outside the windows. They is usually only one or two, accessible from the lobby areas. If his apartment was engulfed in flames, what would you suggest he do? Perhaps you should use your brains, and be a little less judgmental.

I lived in a block of flats also on the 5th floor. The only escape from the flat was my front door and then down stairs. I had an intruder in my flat when I was home and the only escape was past him. The result was battered face with a cracked jaw and messed up shoulders (requiring operations and still give a lot of pain). I was also left black and blue but I was still very lucky as I had phoned the police when I heard him breaking the lock on the door. Since then I will never again live in any other building with only one exit. I can fully appreciate why this man decided to jump instead of being burned to death. Think also of 9/11 and the people jumping out of the Twin Towers instead of being burned to death.

@frenchie 1 We don't have all the facts so don't speculate and be sarcastic about this 2 If there's a fire in your apartment and for some reason you cant get to the fire escape or use it and your life depends on getting out or burn to death you will also jump! most humans will so don't make moronic statements!!!!
