Vereeniging - A 59-year-old man is fighting for his life after he was mauled by a pair of dogs in Meyerton, outside Vereeniging, on Wednesday.

According to paramedics, the man had been walking in the field when he came across the dogs which then attacked him.

"A member of the public that had apparently witnessed the event managed to chase the dogs from the scene, as well as offer assistance to the patient," said ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring.

Paramedics found the man lying on the side of the road. He had sustained bite injuries to his arms, legs, abdomen and head, Meiring said.

The injured man was given advanced life support before being transported to the Sebokeng Hospital.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) was believed to have captured the dogs.

News24 could not immediately reach the SPCA to clarify what would happen to the animals.
