Man dies after car falls onto tracks

2010-10-02 16:00
Durban - A man has died and another man has been seriously injured after their car fell off a bridge onto railway tracks in the centre of Durban, emergency personnel said on Saturday.

"The car plunged from a Warwick interchange overpass onto the railway tracks of the Berea Station nearly 15 metres below," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks.

"All indications are that the vehicle [crashed through] the barrier... and plunged onto the tracks. The vehicle struck the overhead power cable support struts and a section of the platform before rolling several times onto the tracks coming to rest on its roof."

The exact cause of the accident is unclear but police will be investigating.

Paramedics arrived to find the two men lying near the "crumpled wreckage of the four-door sedan".

Both men were taken to Addington Hospital where the critically injured man died shortly after arrival.
