Johannesburg - One man died and 15 people were injured on Tuesday morning when a taxi hit the back of a truck on William Nicol Drive near Randburg in Johannesburg, paramedics said.

"Paramedics found that 16 people had been in the taxi at the time of the crash, and the three front seat occupants were the most severely injured," said ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson.

"A man sitting in the front seat was critically injured and as paramedics initiated stabilisation attempts on him his condition deteriorated and despite their attempts to revive the man, he died on scene."

The driver and a woman sitting in the front passenger seat were trapped in the wreckage, with firefighters using the jaws of life to remove the bent metal around them.

After the driver and woman were freed from the taxi, they were transported to hospitals in the area.

"They were both alert, but had suffered possible broken bones and were in a stable condition," said Jackson.

"The remaining 13 patients had suffered minor and moderate injuries and they too were taken to hospital for further care."

The cause of the accident was being investigated, though it was believed the truck might have suddenly changed lanes, causing the taxi to drive into the back of it.

The accident happened at around 08:00.
