Cape Town - A 25-year-old man died and 47 people were left homeless after shack fires in Du Noon in Blaauwberg, the City of Cape Town said on Tuesday.

Disaster risk management spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said the man who died was fast asleep when a fire broke out amongst shacks in the area on Monday night.

The fire eventually gutted 20 shacks, including the one in which the man slept.

The family of the man who died in the fire has received trauma counselling.

Those displaced have been provided with food parcels, clothing, blankets and building material.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Given the "building materials" to reconstruct the shacks??? Speechless.

Just as speechless. According to sources, those people are illegally occupying that land, are not complying with municipal safety regulations and are stealing electricity via extremely dangerous methods. Why would your authorities provide them with the means to continue doing so? Therefore the **speechless** comment above. Can somebody cast some light on the topic or is it a uniquely South African phenomenon?
