Johannesburg - A man was killed and a woman seriously injured in an accident in Germiston, east of Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni metro police said on Saturday.

The man, aged 64, was driving his 4x4 on the N3 south near the Rand Airport offramp on Friday evening around 22:30 when he lost control of the car, said Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng.

The 4x4 crashed into barriers and overturned, flinging the man from the car onto the road, where he was driven over by passing cars.

The woman, in her 50s, sustained serious injuries and was trapped in the wreckage.

She was later freed through emergency services using the Jaws-of-Life, and taken to hospital for further treatment.

It was not clear what caused the accident, said Mokheseng.

However, preliminary investigations showed the 4x4, travelling towards Alberton, drove over a "rabbit size rock" placed in the second left lane.

Police opened a case of culpable homicide and were investigating.
