Man dies in wet weather crash

Durban - A man was killed and three others injured in a head-on collision on the N4 near Zimbali, north of Durban, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks said the accident happened when the driver of a VW Playa apparently lost control and the car swerved into the oncoming traffic in the southbound lane.

The car crashed into an Opel Kadett. Both vehicles swerved back into the northbound lane before coming to a stop. Three other cars failed to stop because of the wet weather and crashed into the two vehicles.

"The driver of the Opel had sustained polytraumatic injuries and as a result died at the scene," said Wicks.

Daughter injured

"His body, and the seriously injured front seat passenger, were trapped in the crushed wreckage of the car.

The couple's daughter, who had been in the back seat at the time of the collision, were also been seriously injured.

The woman had to be cut from the wreck of the car.

"The driver of the VW Polo Playa was also seriously injured," said Wicks.

All the injured were transported to hospital and were in a serious condition.

Wicks said traffic was severely obstructed in both directions while emergency service personnel and recovery experts cleared the scene.
