2011-06-17 10:09

Johannesburg - A 25-year-old worker in the Lowveld Botanical Gardens in Mpumalanga drowned in the Crocodile River after trying to save an iguana, Beeld newspaper reported on Friday.

The man had wanted to help the iguana which was stuck between two rocks on Wednesday. He lost his balance and fell into the river.

Despite attempts by his colleagues to help him, he was swept away over a 15-metre waterfall and disappeared into the whirlpool below the falls.

Police divers found his body on Thursday.

God bless his sole. It takes a really special kind of person to risk his life to save an animal.

Look it's very sad indeed, a funny but reasonable question...was it all in vain?

      Opinionated - 2011-06-17 11:13

Iguanas can actually swim really well...

      The All Seeing Eye - 2011-06-17 12:00

@opionated Read the story. It was stuck between rocks

      Flee - 2011-06-17 12:06

Opinionated. Seams the Iguana was wedged between two rocks, and not swimming, but do wonder how it is doing? My condolences to the very brave man. May his family know that he was a true hero.. selfless and caring..

I agree with Opinionated, they are very good swimmers. They can dive very deep under water. probably this guy did not know that

  • edgar.flaplap - 2011-06-17 14:23

Very sad indeed, but one must ask what the hell an iguana was doing in the crocodile river.

      Worldwise - 2011-06-17 17:31

Exactly what I was thinking. Its an exotic species and not native to SA. Maybe the reporter doesn't know the difference between an Iguana and a Leguaan? Quite likely seeing the report came from SAPA.

R.I.P to the guy, what an anti-climatic way to end your life....
