Man drowns at Cape Town beach

2012-02-12 18:03

Johannesburg -  A man has died and another remains missing after their boat capsized in rough sea conditions at Cape Town's Noordhoek beach, the National Sea Rescue Institute said on Sunday.

Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said a rescue crew was sent to the beach near Kommetjie around 07:00 on Saturday following eye-witness reports that a rubber duck had washed up on shore.

"Approximately 30m away the body of an adult male was found," he said.

"Later on the same day, a man in Hout Bay claimed to be a survivor of the same rubber-duck and claimed that a third man remains missing.

"Family members of the missing man have also subsequently come forward and confirmed that all three men launched the rubber-duck late on Friday night to go fishing," said Lambinon.

All three men were believed to be from Hout Bay.

Shore patrols on Saturday night and Sunday morning found no sign of the missing man.

Bit puzzling..launched rubber duck at Hout Bay.. makes sense but found at Kommetjie means they washed all the way, round Cape Point, past Simons Town, past Fish Hook to Commetjie, Atlantic ocean to Indian ocean. sounds fishy to me (pun intended). I grew up there, but it's still sad.

No, the men were from Hout Bay but they went fishing at Noordhoek which is near Kommetjie.

@alansmartSnr, Noordhoek Beach is at the south of Hout Bay (Just past Chapmans Peak) and Kommetjie is a little more south(maybe 15km as the crow flies). Nothing Fishy, if you grew up in the area you obviously didn't do too well when getting around, you don't know you geography of the area at all.

You can see Hout bay from Kommetjie. Noordhoek is between the two and all three are on the Atlantic side. No trip past Simons town or Fishoek required. True Story!

the swell was kind of big on Saturday…why go out on a rubber-duck…sorry to hear the bad news though

      John - 2012-02-13 17:18

They paid the price for a bad decision. The sea was far to big for a duck, even a small craft would have been hell...
