Johannesburg - A 60-year-old man from Pretoria died after he and two others were rescued after they got pulled into a current while swimming at Illovo Beach, south of Durban, paramedics said on Tuesday.

When lifeguards got the bathers the 60-year-old man collapsed and stopped breathing, presumably having suffered a heart attack, Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

"After they brought the bathers to the shore they immediately started resuscitating him. Paramedics arrived and after examining the man they declared him dead on scene."

A 19-year-old man was treated for near drowning symptoms and taken to a local hospital.

"The other bather was examined and then left in the care of family members."
