Johannesburg - The police dive unit is searching for the body of a 30-year-old man who drowned near Gordons Bay in the Western Cape, the National Sea Rescue Institute said on Monday.

Edward Roussow, NSRI duty coxswain, said his crew was called to the scene between Bikini Beach and the Steenbras river mouth at 13:40.

Roussow said the man's colleague told rescuers he had been swept off a rock by waves and disappeared under the water immediately.

The man is believed to be a construction worker on a building site nearby.

His colleagues tried to rescue him by throwing ropes in his direction but were unsuccessful.

"Despite an extensive sea and shore search, including a dive search by police divers...no sign of the missing man. A police dive unit will resume the search [on Tuesday]."

Police have opened an inquest docket. The man's name has not been released.
