2011-12-31 21:08

Cape Town - A man drowned while swimming with friends at Melkbaai beach in Strand on Saturday, said the disaster risk management centre in Cape-Town.

Spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said the 28-year-old man was swimming with five of his friends when they realised they were too far out.

"While making their way back, they realised that their friend was in distress." He was unconscious when he was pulled out of the water by lifeguards.

Solomons-Johannes said CPR was performed on the man but was declared dead at the scene.

Na, cant blame HZ or the DA. Melkbaai is probably one of the safest beaches in the country. For more than 40years there were no drownings at this beach, now it's almost an annual occurrence. I live there, so know - observe the behaviour of some beachgoers, and it's not surprising. In spite of visible policing, alcohol flows freely. In any case, this poor victim may have just over exerted himself, panicked and had a heart attack. Sad end to 2011 for his family....
