Durban - A KwaZulu-Natal man drowned near Durban on Thursday afternoon, paramedics said.
Netcare 911 said the man, believed to be in his 40s, drowned shortly after entering the water at Warner Beach, south of Durban.
The man, a local resident from the nearby Llovu township, was pulled from the water by lifesavers who desperately tried to resuscitate him.
However he was declared dead shortly after paramedics arrived on the scene and their efforts had also failed.
The man's two young daughters, believed to be aged 10 and 11 years, watched as lifeguards and paramedics battled in vain to save the man's life.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Danelia Veldhuizen confirmed the incident, saying that an inquest docket would be opened shortly.
