Johannesburg - A man drowned while fishing near Brighton Beach in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, paramedics said on Monday.

The 36-year-old spear fisherman, who drowned on Sunday afternoon, was brought to shore by a lifeguard, Rescue Care spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said.

"Support intervention was performed and the patient was placed on a manual ventilator while resuscitation efforts continued," said Jamieson.

After 30 minutes of resuscitation paramedics felt a faint pulse and the man was rushed to King Edward Hospital but died at the hospital on Sunday night.

"At this stage it is unclear what happened. However [police] were on the scene and will be investigating the incident further," said Jamieson.
