Cape Town - A local man who couldn’t face going home to his girlfriend without money instead laid a false charge of kidnapping with police.

The man had promised his girlfriend he would come home with money but on his return claimed that he had been kidnapped in front of a hotel, reported Die Burger.

But police smelled a rat and he was arrested on Tuesday.

He had told police that he was kidnapped by three unknown men, forced into a car and driven off to a house where money was stolen from him. He said he was later left next to the N1.

But when the investigating officer took the man to the crime scene on Tuesday, the officer realised that he didn’t have enough information about the incident.

The man then admitted that he had never been kidnapped and confessed to making up the story after a business partner failed to give him some money that he had promised to his girlfriend.

“That is why he laid a false charge, so that his girlfriend would accept his apology about why he came back without the expected money,” said police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk.
