Johannesburg - A West Rand man who was filmed by the close circuit camera he allegedly stole outside a nursery school on Sunday afternoon has been arrested, Beeld reported on Wednesday.

Lena Henning, the owner of a nursery school in Roodepoort, said a newspaper reader contacted her after recognising the suspect's picture published in Beeld and on Facebook on Tuesday.

On Monday, Henning viewed recorded footage to find out who had stolen her camera, and saw clearly how two men arrived at the nursery school just after 17:00 on Sunday, reversed their bakkie into the driveway, and proceeded to remove her camera with their power tools.

She gave the video material and the information about the suspect to the police.

"The thief then arrived at the nursery school and wanted to know where I'd got my information. He alleged that someone had asked him to remove the camera as I had not paid for it," Henning said.

She emphasised that there was no question of any outstanding payment.

Police spokesperson Captain Lydia Mtila-Dikolomela confirmed that the suspect was subsequently identified and arrested, and that he was being held at the Florida police station.

He will appear in court on Thursday.
