Man fined for punching professor

2011-12-06 12:48

Cape Town - A businessman from Mpumalanga was fined R2 000 on Tuesday for punching a Stellenbosch university professor over a letter he wrote to a newspaper.

Abel Albertus Malan appeared in the Stellenbosch Regional Court before Magistrate Anne Marie Immelman, who also ordered him to pay R2 000 compensation to the academic, Anton van Niekerk.

The letter that appeared in Beeld newspaper criticised Afrikaners for their role in the bush war in South West Africa, now Namibia.

In addition to the R2 000 fine and R2 000 compensation, Malan was sentenced to three months imprisonment, conditionally suspended for five years.

The hearing took the form of plea bargain proceedings.

Malan paid the fine.

Can I make a donation to help you with the fine, otherwise if you have it, it sounds like it was worth it!

      Yusuf - 2011-12-06 14:01

you can,but dont spend your grocery money

      Sharkshoot - 2011-12-06 18:36

      I'll help too.

      emile.eley - 2011-12-06 21:57

Girls kill a chicken and all hell breaks loose on these pages. A racist attacks an academic and he gets praised. Twisted logic indeed.

  • Aquila - 2011-12-06 13:03

But you spill some liquid on the King...err sorry on the president, and you get an R8000 fine.

      Marion - 2011-12-06 15:32

@Aquila... not even one drop touched the president. That fiasco was just another gigantic waste of taxpayers money.

  • RSole - 2011-12-06 13:07

So much for "sticks and stones can break my bones". Looks like words can hurt you after all.

      Trudy - 2011-12-06 13:25

      Yes the truth hurts

  • Maai - 2011-12-06 13:09

At least he gave the brown-nosing turncoat a klap.

      Martin - 2011-12-07 10:14

This world is too soft, punching a guy is nothing, it should be mandatory, punch and dispute over.... guy fels better, prof knows his place... seriously,I dont lay charges after a fight. Duelling is the best way to settle scores

  • Morne - 2011-12-06 13:10

    Publish the letter!

  • Heiku - 2011-12-06 13:22

  • Stephen - 2011-12-06 13:36

R4000 for making statement like that, seems like a good deal. You should have knocked him out, you might have paid an extra R2000 but thats ok. I'm proud of all of my people who have fought and died for South Africa, all of them.

      Inky - 2011-12-06 13:55

I did not read the article written by the professor but judging from the above article it sounds like he was critical of the National Party (Apartheid government) and not South Africa. Have you confused the two?

      Maai - 2011-12-06 14:08

@Inky the Apartheid government was A LOT better than the current one.

      Maai - 2011-12-06 14:40

@Yusuf no, my surname is Foedie. Figure it out.

      paulmandlankosi - 2011-12-06 14:53

      Dof

      Moi - 2011-12-06 15:11

@Yurak - I do speak portuguese. Every day. Do you not like the russian or portuguese? Was the shop owner not willing to negotiate a better deal on the fruit and veg or did your mail order bride do a runner when she saw you?

      Yusuf - 2011-12-06 15:19

lol.moi.neither i think.he spent all his money on tin food in 1994

      Maai - 2011-12-06 15:25

@Yusuf that tinned food might come in handy when there are no white farmers left....

      Inky - 2011-12-06 15:38

@ Yurak. Your comment makes no sense! The apartheid government’s armed forces were fighting to prevent people obtaining their freedom they now enjoy. The same armed forces lost the war and their “enemy” now governs the country but we do not speak Portuguese or Russian.

      Inky - 2011-12-06 20:39

@Maai. I have lived through British, Nat and ANC governments and in my opinion the Nats and ANC have dragged SA back into the dark ages and both have been nothing but bad news for the country. Looking back I do believe that during the British rule our country was respected and accepted by the western world and we had the chance of a bright future. The Nats made us the polecats of the world and the ANC has made us a joke in the civilised world.

      emile.eley - 2011-12-06 22:03

Yes Maai you would say that as you were probably not subjected to the degradation and humiliation the majority of South Africans faced under Apartheid. People were brutalised and dehumanised for simply being the wrong colour. You seem to forget that you were afforded privileges by nothing other than the accident of birth.

      Inky - 2011-12-07 01:40

@ Yurak. Judging by the quality of your comments, (or lack thereof) and your use of profanity and personal insults it is very unlikely that you would be capable of educating me or anyone else with a reasonable intellect. It appears you are only capable of repeating National Party propaganda you were force fed and will therefore continue making an ass of yourself.

  • wnkambule - 2011-12-06 13:38

    Worth a KO!

  • Chabi - 2011-12-06 13:43

These professors can be Nutty.... but now White on White violence is on the increase in Zille Country these days...

      Yusuf - 2011-12-06 14:05

  • Johncarlos ? Biza - 2011-12-06 13:51

The far right are not known for their civility

      Yusuf - 2011-12-06 14:04

      or the ability to think

      Maai - 2011-12-06 14:09

      Neither are the "previously disadvantaged".

      Yusuf - 2011-12-06 14:15

maai, this article is not about the previously disadvantaged

      Maai - 2011-12-06 14:42

@Yusuf shouldnt you be strapping on a vest?

      Yusuf - 2011-12-06 14:49

a vest maai?what are you implying

      Marion - 2011-12-06 15:43

@Maai... have the courage of your convictions and get rid of the faceless avatar. Easy to be abusive when you are hiding like any wuss who is only brave when he has all his mates to back him up. Based on the Max du Preez definition of the word I think you are appropriately named.

  • Shirley - 2011-12-06 13:51

This article is not very clear on just why/what happened. Just for the record though afrikaner/english soldiers who were in the bush war were there because national service was compulsory. So without knowing the full story- Il just say that it wasnt only an afrikaner war.

      Marion - 2011-12-06 15:33

Agree with you 100% Shirley. Both English and Afrikaans were conscripted.

      Chum Scrubber - 2011-12-06 16:26

True, its an insult to pretend us souts sat the whole thing out.

      Danie - 2011-12-07 08:50

Agreed Shirley, and in addition even fewer know what was really fought for, and that the ratio of the Koevoet forces (to name but 1 of many) who were the 1st line of defence was around 10% white, and 90% black soldiers - all brothers fighting against communism together.

  • Andre - 2011-12-06 13:58

That was easy! Can the prof institute a civil claim? Like my prof always use to say "It is not who you are, but who you know".

  • davieoosie - 2011-12-06 14:43

    Give that man a Bell's.

      Maai - 2011-12-06 15:00

      @Yusuf can you get lost?

      Yusuf - 2011-12-06 15:13

      no i cant maai

      davieoosie - 2011-12-06 15:16

Yes Yusuf, I never had a Bell's before, but I know when someone deserves one.

      Maai - 2011-12-06 15:23

@Yusuf its not that difficult...just go on a hiking trip in Pakistan.

      Yusuf - 2011-12-06 16:13

you been to pakistan maai?is it a nice place?

  • Marion - 2011-12-06 15:30

Why did the prof just pick on the Afrikaners? I was raised English speaking and two of my brothers were conscripted into the army, one of whom had to serve in the Caprivi strip.

      Dewald - 2011-12-06 16:58

Because the Afrikaners are easier to take on a guilt trip, Marion. Yes, we fought togetherin the army - all languages and actually all races.

  • davieoosie - 2011-12-06 15:57

@paulmandlankosi - Now how can you know that, don't you watch TV commercials and understand the concept of humor. I thought you were intelligent.

  • Chum Scrubber - 2011-12-06 16:31

Havent read the profs letter, but surely there was a better way to handle this. We all deserve a bit of criticism here and there, if we don't like it rather try prove the oke wrong. If he's right, apologise, maybe explain to him why certain things happened in the past. What we did is what we did, it seemed right ot most of us besides the conscientious objectors. (Must admit, those okes had guts to stand up for what they believed in, even if I didn't agree with them)

  • James - 2011-12-06 16:36

http://news.iafrica.com/sa/742353.html "The professor wrote in a recent letter in Die Burger that the apartheid policies and the Afrikaner's involvement in the border bush wars were indefensible. The letter offended Malan, who confronted the professor about it in the academic's office at the university. The charge sheet alleges that Malan threatened Van Niekerk with bodily harm unless he changed his views about apartheid, and the role of the Afrikaner in the border war." This guy is an idiot, i hope he gets it in jail

      Dewald - 2011-12-06 17:02

Take a deep breath, and read all the articles slowly again - make sure there is not an article on Jackie Selebi slipped inbetween. Then answer the following question for R5 : Who is going to jail?.

      Maai - 2011-12-06 18:54

Yes because the new post 1994 South Africa is so much better isnt it?

      emile.eley - 2011-12-06 22:13

Yes Maai for the majority of South Africans it is. The good old days are gone for good. Get used to it.

  • Theo - 2011-12-07 08:54

@emile....wake up...a racist attack????...huh....Malan hit van Niekerk...halloooooo!!!! What an idiot!!!

  • Theo - 2011-12-07 08:55
