Port Elizabeth - A German businessman was found dead in a Port Elizabeth hotel room, it was reported on Friday.

According to The Herald, the 25-year-old was found lying in a pool of blood on Wednesday morning at the Garden Court Hotel. His throat had been slit.

Police at the scene said it seemed the man had slit his own throat in the bedroom area and had tried to walk to the door near the bathroom for help.

Captain Johan Rheeder said the man was last seen checking into his room on Tuesday evening.

"He was dropped off by someone and went to his room alone. The following morning a colleague called the hotel security to check on his whereabouts after several attempts to get hold of him failed," Rheeder was quoted as saying.

The hotel managers used a master key to open the door which had been double-latched from the inside.

Hotel records and CCTV footage show that no one entered or left the room from Tuesday evening.

According to the Herald, the woman who dropped the man off said he had not been himself.

Rheeder told the publication that should evidence arise indicating foul play, the case would be changed from an inquest to murder.
