Port Elizabeth - An Eastern Cape man has been jailed for 18 years by the Addo Regional Court for killing his girlfriend, police said on Tuesday.

Vuyo Dyasi, 26, was sentenced on Friday, said Warrant Officer Gerda Swart.

He stabbed his girlfriend Amanda Alkenstead, 26, to death near a tavern in Valencia in October 2009.

Dyasi maintained his innocence throughout the trial, and the motive for the murder remained a mystery.

An ex-girlfriend testified that she saw Dyasi with blood on his shoes and clothing the morning after the murder.

"Dyasi burnt his clothing and shoes prior to his arrest," said Swart.

He was convicted on circumstantial evidence, she said.
