Johannesburg - An 18-year-old man was sentenced to 20 years in jail at the Tembisa Magistrate's Court for raping a woman, police said on Thursday.
Captain Manyadza Ralidzhivha said William Ngwanju helped the 20-year-old woman with her gardening and arrived at her home late in the evening in May last year to collect some tools.
He entered the woman's home, grabbed her and tried to overpower her. He told her that he wanted to have sex with her. She refused and managed to push him off her.
"When he pushed her over he fell on top of her, he did penetrate her but she managed to get away," Ralidzhivha said.
The woman laid a charge of rape at the Tembisa Police Station.
Ngwanju was later arrested.
The Tembisa Magistrate's Court found him guilty of rape and sentenced him to 20 years in jail on Wednesday.
"I am happy with the sentence. It will serve as a deterrent to those who are still moving around overpowering women and (raping) them. Abuse of women and children will never be tolerated," said assistant police commissioner Joel Mokwena.
