Man gets life for raping teen

2012-03-06 10:34

Johannesburg - The man dubbed the MXit rapist was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Benoni Regional Court on Monday.

Magistrate Ian Cox said David Heath Coughlan, 28, had deviously lured a 15-year-old girl to his house where he raped her before fleeing.

To date, he has shown no sign of remorse or given any indication of taking responsibility for his actions, and there was no other option but to send Coughlan to jail for life, Cox said.

Coughlan stared straight ahead and occasionally shook his head when disagreeing with Cox.

Child pornography

He was sentenced to a further five years imprisonment for possession of child pornography, which was found on his computer. The two sentences would not be served concurrently.

The girl’s parents were visibly relieved and said they were satisfied with the sentence.

“It was terrible for my daughter and for us and it wrecked us emotionally and financially,” said the mother outside court.

In his verdict, Cox pointed out that the girl was receiving psychological help and had undergone behavioural changes.

Coughlan met her in July 2010 on the chat service MXit and began a friendship with her.

After sentencing, Coughlan ran quickly down the steps to the court cells without greeting his parents.

An application for leave to appeal against the verdict and sentencing would be heard next week.

Sick freak! Now if only the same sentencing were applied to ALL rapists!!!!!!!! Papa wag vir jou boetie...

      Jim - 2012-03-06 11:20

He sure is going to deserve the slow puncture he's gonna get the bastard...

      Tanie - 2012-03-06 11:53

Aintlek, who are the killers and rapists in South Africa? we might be united by accepting that these barbaric pricks are cross-cultural.

  • TheJaydedKing - 2012-03-06 10:45

Once his service commences he will become acutely aware of what it feels like to be raped. 15 years of anal coming to a cinema in him soon.

      Art - 2012-03-06 10:55

He will get "TIRED of BENDING OVER"! HAHAHA!!!! The wheel turns...... and it turns slowly... yet it turns...

  • Crapdetector - 2012-03-06 10:49

Pretty sure he will be on the receiving end of some "sexy time" where he's going. Puts a smile on my face.

  • Penny - 2012-03-06 10:54

We need Shariya law in SA. Put the rapists to death !!!

      Johan - 2012-03-06 11:22

No we don't need shariya law...

      Hugo - 2012-03-06 11:31

with sharia law the girl would be facing arrest too!

      J-Man - 2012-03-06 11:41

Agree with Hugo and Johan. Penny - fo you even know what the Shariya law REALLY says? And how primitive it is?

      Anthony - 2012-03-06 11:48

With Shariah Law the girl would already have been stoned to death!

      Anastasia - 2012-03-06 11:51

if I recall correctly, the correct sentance for a woman who has sex (rape included) outside of marriage, is to be stoned to death. So, no, I don't think we need Shariya law.

      Schmee - 2012-03-06 12:53

Penny, study up on stuff before you make a comment like that.

      Johan - 2012-03-06 13:23

Nonsense Naseema. Rape still happens in countries that practises sharia law. Pakistan, Syria, Saudi - all over the Muslim world. Only difference is that the victim gets treated like the rapist. They are regarded as guilty and can be sent to prison or even get the death penalty. Sharia law is flawed. This following link refers to a similar story than the one mentioned above. Only difference, it happened in the UAE and they arrested the 14 year old rape victim also, according to sharia law. Read it and weep. http://therese-zrihen-dvir.over-blog.com/article-raped-in-uae-could-face-80-lashes-or-stoning-54901354.html

      ludlowdj - 2012-03-06 15:10

Other than condemning the victim to death as well, Sharia (Shariah) law is a religious law confined to the Islamic faith, as such it will never, and cannot ever be a part of our legal system. Internationally it is practiced within Islamic families and communities worldwide but is not accepted as a legal argument anywhere that is not a Muslim majority country. In countries where it is practiced it is used against followers of all major religions even though the Koran specifies it as a believers law.

So happy to hear that this young girl has received justice at last although her life will never be what it might have been. Also overjoyed to hear that the sentences are to run concurrently and not consecutively. Well done Magistrate Cox.

      Ryan - 2012-03-06 11:18

Hi Marion. The article says "The two sentences would not be served concurrently" and therefor consecutively, The sentences then follow one another and not at the same time; which is better, unlike that taxi driver whose sentences for 10 murders run concurrently. I think you just muddled the words around, but your sentiment is correct.

  • Aston - 2012-03-06 11:00

30 years for the guy who raped and murdered his girlfriend in Cape Town and life imprisonment for this guy?

      J-Man - 2012-03-06 11:41

Life is an effective 25 years.

      Gungets - 2012-03-06 11:48

Life is 25 years, not in jail till you die. Just saying.

      Lyzelle - 2012-03-06 11:51

Girlfriend?????????? I don't think so - that is why he felt compelled to kill her - she did not want him the sicko!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Pur - 2012-03-06 12:28

Life is supposedly 25 years but effectively 1/3 of that time, or less. This guy can be back on the streets in 7 to 8 years.

  • Dianne - 2012-03-06 11:01

Sick pervert...... Big daddy is ready for you......and a few more bigger daddies :o)

  • Aston - 2012-03-06 11:02

why don't justice systems issue standard sentences for crimes regardless of the circumstances?

  • lovellt - 2012-03-06 11:05

Great, life sentence is what this dude deserves. I'm just asking myself, why did this man get a life sentence, and the Eksteen dude who raped, killed and burried the Van Rensburg girl only got 30 years??? Am I missing something?

      Marion - 2012-03-06 11:13

Because of her age a life sentence is mandatory.

      lovellt - 2012-03-06 11:19

The age of the victem should not even be a factor. The Eksteen brat should get life too!!! The system is seriously warped!!!

      Gungets - 2012-03-06 11:57

I believe "life" means no less than 10 but no more than 25. It varies because it can get reviewed when you turn 65. Eksteen has been sentenced to more, 30. Unless the sentence states "life with no parole", in nwhicch case they get to die in jail, sooner or later.

  • maria.trautmann2 - 2012-03-06 11:20

This doesn't add up or make sense!! I am all for punishing rapist's I think death penalty! but they had been friends since 2010, she went to his house! Is she not claiming rape? ok he had child porn on his computer which is sick but its not like he stalked her and attacked her somewhere public! I know the young girls of today think nothing for sexual acts! I don't know her story and I am sure she is traumatised but she went there of her own accord! what did she expect would happen?? did she expect milk and cookies? There should be an age limit on Mxit! why are kids meeting strangers there? and why has it not been stopped?

      Susan - 2012-03-06 12:12

Yes I agree, with all this new technology, are kids made aware of such people, sometimes children are naughty, i hope this was not the case..14 year old kids should be communicating with kids their own age at school.

      karien.dutoit - 2012-03-07 14:29

What an ignorant idiot you are! So, it is her fault that he raped her? Then I'm guessing that every farmer that gets murdered, also have only themselves to blame (they choose to live on a farm, therefore they must be looking for trouble?). No, he didn't stalk her or attack her in public, he lured her to his house with an invitation to a party, drugged her and THEN raped her, so naturally, she asked for it... right? Clearly you don't know the story, so why comment at all. I happen to personally know the girl and her parents and they have been through hell since he raped her IN 2010 (yes, our legal system took almost 2 years to sentence him). I honestly can not believe you, I keep re-reading your comment just to make sure I understand what you're saying, and honestly, I think you're as twisted as he is. You OBVIOUSLY do not have teenaged children! For your sake, I hope that neither you nor a member of your family ever have to go through what this young girl have had to endure, but I'm sure if you ever have the misfortune of coming into contact with such a horrible crime, that you will sing a different tune. And by the way, she's not CLAIMING rape, she was examined after the incident and found to have been FORCIBLY raped. Does that sound like something she went looking for???

  • Johan - 2012-03-06 11:23

Life sentence is great. But why do so many other murderers just get twenty years, or they walk free? I dont get this at all!

  • les.cunningham1 - 2012-03-06 11:24

@Marion - Please read the article "The two sentences would not be served concurrently".

  • Hugo - 2012-03-06 11:30

    another savage

  • eblockwatch - 2012-03-06 11:33

Who says that eblockwatch can not give life. We did in this case. We tracked the rapist down and now he has life

      Anastasia - 2012-03-06 11:52

      Like. Like very much indeed.

  • Riaan - 2012-03-06 11:36

Ja ou maat pak maar baie Vaseline in hoor !!! F*%%#n hond

  • Eric - 2012-03-06 11:43

He should have stuffed her in a travel bag THEN killed her. Would have gotten 30 for that instead of life.

      Anastasia - 2012-03-06 11:55

Life in SA is 25 years. Not sure how long he has to serve before he qualifies to apply for parole. It used to be 1/3 of sentence, but I seem to recall that 50% of sentence now has to be served before parole applications are considered.

  • Chantel De Caires - 2012-03-06 11:45

I personally knew this Psycho!!! He was stalking me for quite some time. He Constantly threatened to commit suicide if I didn't date him, said he was in love with me and that I was the only one for him. I felt very uncomfortable whenever he would text me. I am VERY glad that he has been put behind bars!!!!

      Johan - 2012-03-06 13:36

      Glad for you too!

  • reza.daniels1 - 2012-03-06 11:49

I hope they shove 5kg of cocaine stored in a condom up his @ss.....and after 12 hrs of discomfort it should burst.......I wish I could spit in his face.....and kick him in the crotch with a steel tipped boot.

  • Lyzelle - 2012-03-06 11:51

Quite a "Pretty Boy" - going to have lots of action!

  • RealNikka - 2012-03-06 11:54

Where are those racists who just stereotype the whole black race when an article is about a black person committing a crime and go on about "Black people are..." dont they feel like stereotyping

      Johan - 2012-03-06 11:56

Who said it is only black people comitting crime? Why bring race into it. The man is going to jail and we are all relieved about it!

      Truthis - 2012-03-06 12:00

Yeah, at least this was not an racist genocidal attack of black on white like it is 99% of the time.

      RealNikka - 2012-03-06 12:02

No I just see whenever a black person does something the whole race is brought in to it...Last week or yesterday...there was an article about kids striking because one of the kids got stabbed...and whole lot of people were saying "why do black people", "Its the nature of black people","they learn it from their parents".... The other article about a lady who saved her hubby via facebook again, comments were "Why do black people rape and kill our wives n kids", "What is wrong with black people".. So I was kinda expecting those same culprits to stereotype as usual.. surprisingly "Its not about the race now its about this monster" I am actually glad that you know that Crime has no colour, a criminal is a criminal irrespective of the skin colour..

      Kese - 2012-03-06 13:25

You couldn't have said it better RealNikka, I get sick everytime there's an article about black people committing crime because of the comments some bloggers make. They make me cringe at my desk. Crime affects everyone, it knows no colour... I'm glad this prick got a life sentence, one less rapist in our streets!

      Pixie86 - 2012-03-06 17:45

johan, you're usually the first to pull the race card everytime a rape article comes up! Face facts, people on this forum always pull the race when it comes to crime. If this man had been black and the woman white, this would have been another genocide attack by a black man! Get over it! Crime has no colour!

  • cryksen - 2012-03-06 12:00

Mixit or no mixit internet or no internet. if you say no to sex it is rape. why is it always if you get raped you where looking for it. maybe he posed as a 15 year old girl looking for friends we will never know but no-one regardless of your age deserves to be raped if a woman or girl says no it is no. and yes there are girls/children out there that are sluttish or to big for their ages but it don't mean they deserve to be raped I personally feel the parents are to blame for not brining that girl up to respect herself and have standards. as for girls who get raped I also blame the parents you should be protecting them and teaching them to protect them self We may not be able to prevent it every time but if you know how to protect your kids and teach them to protect themselves maybe we can minimise it. the world is sick and we need to do something about it even if the government wants rebellion in our youth we as parents still have the right to protect our kids and teach them from right and wrong the youth should not be carried on our hands but should know the harsh truth and be brought up the proper way. sorry my post is very "deurmekaar" so I hope that some of you do understand what I am trying to say

  • Lesley-Ann - 2012-03-06 14:50

I hope there's no chance of parole for this bastard. His poor parents.

  • Evan - 2012-03-06 14:50

I'm all for very harsh rape sentences, but why is is that in South Africa, that murderers get off with less prison time. The punishment must fit the crime. Let us also NOT lose sight of the fact that rape under any circumstances is wrong! This guy is going to be in jail for a long, long time!

  • ludlowdj - 2012-03-06 15:03

Another statement that doesn't really mean anything! in terms of our new government, what is life, when broken down into a period of years, what are the parole specifications for this crime and does the convicted qualify for one or the routine presidential pardons that see people sentenced to double digit sentences walk out after a year or two?

  • Boleta Lengeloi Nonyane - 2012-03-10 13:06
