Man, girl 'had sex in pig pens'
Gerhard Pretorius, Beeld
Pretoria - A man from Pretoria North admitted on Wednesday that he had sex with a young girl in pig pens and cowsheds, but insisted she was already 16 when they had sexual contact for the first time.
According to the charge sheet, the girl, now an adult woman, was between 8 and 16 at the time of the incidents.
"The first time that I had sex with her was on Mother's Day in 2004 when we went to buy a gift for my wife," testified Barend Honiball, 43, in the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
He is facing two counts of rape, three of indecent assault and one of attempted murder, amongst other charges.
Prosecutor Advocate Cornelia Harmzen put it to Honiball during cross examination that he had sex with the victim since she was 8 years old and continued until she was 16.
Honiball, however, maintained that she was 16 when they had sex for the first time, and that she had given consent.
He testified that they had sex in cowsheds and pig pens, amongst others.
"In the beginning, she suggested the sex but later I also started to suggest having sex. We usually did it very quickly because we were scared of being caught," testified Honiball.
When magistrate Pieter Nel asked him why he did it in the first place, Honiball answered: "Because I enjoyed it."
Nel also wanted to know why Honiball then stopped.
"It started bothering me and I later realised what I was doing wasn't right."
He could not answer Nel's question about when the complainant was born, but insisted that she was already 16 when they first had sexual contact.
Harmzen put it to him that the indecent assault started back in 1995.
The rapes allegedly took place between 2002 and 2005, but the indecent assaults started long before.
It was said in court that he had sex with the girl up to seven times a week.
Honiball denied that it happened this often.
He also denied sodomising her.
Honiball said he had since divorced his wife.
The charge of attempted murder was based on Honiball allegedly trying to suffocate the girl with the inner tube of a tyre.
He was released on bail of R15 000 in April 2005.
He denies guilt on all charges.
