Johannesburg - A 35-year-old man killed two women, aged 65 and 69, whom he suspected of practising witchcraft in Libode before hanging himself, Eastern Cape police said on Saturday.
Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela said the incident happened at about 14:00 on Friday in the Mthombe locality in the Libode area.
The man had been working in Gauteng but felt that he was not making progress.
The man apparently believed the two women had used magic to stymie his work efforts and were trying to kill him through their use of magic.
He went to each of their two separate houses in Mthombe and reportedly murdered both women.
The man then is said to have hanged himself.
Police were investigating an inquest into the two murders and apparent suicide, said Fatyela.
In unrelated incidents in the Mthatha area two children were struck by lightning and another child drowned.
A 9-year-old boy drowned in the Ndzebe river in the Ndzebe locality in the Tsolo area at about 17:00 on Friday.
In Matseba in the Tsolo area a 4-year-old child was struck and killed by lightning which injured three other people.
In the Jengce locality in Tsolo a 9-year-old boy was also struck by lightning and died on the scene.
Fatyela said a storm had passed over the area on Friday.
