Johannesburg - A 24-year-old man has been arrested for the fatal shooting of a police officer in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, Western Cape police said on Friday.

The 37-year-old detective sergeant from Lingelethu West police station was shot while on duty at SS-Block, Khayelitsha late on Thursday. He died in hospital.

Police spokesperson FC Van Wyk said the police officer was at the time pursuing a person wanted for armed robbery and murder.

"The member was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment where he later died due to injuries sustained," Van Wyk said.

"A swift response by the police resulted in the arrest of a man aged 24-years-old. A murder case is under investigation."

Western Cape police management praised police for their quick response leading to the man's arrest.

"They further expressed a serious concern at the cold blooded killing of an innocent police officer who was performing his duty to the service of the community," Van Wyk said.

"The management has also conveyed sincere condolences to the family and colleagues for the loss of their son and a friend. The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation."
