Johannesburg - A 35-year-old man was arrested and charged with murder after two suspected criminals were beaten to death by residents of Lawley near Lenasia at the weekend, police said.

Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng said residents suspected the two men of being involved in house robberies in the area.

“The community beat them [the two] and one of them died on the spot. Another one died later on in hospital,” he said.

Mofokeng said when they arrived on scene the community failed to provide them with information on how the incident started.

“They all said they did not know anything, however upon investigation, we found that the 35-year-old was involved. The man will appear in court in a week.”

He appealed to residents not to take the law into their own hands.

“If the community notices any suspicious act in the area, they should come forward and notify the police."
