Johannesburg - A 30-year-old man has been arrested for the murder of National Freedom Party ward chairperson Phumelele Buthelezi, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.

"The suspect was arrested yesterday [Thursday], and was formally charged for murder," said Captain Thulani Zwane.

"A 9mm firearm suspected to be used in the murder will be sent for ballistic tests to ascertain if it was used in the commission of any other crime in the country."

The man would appear in the Mahlabathini Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Buthelezi, 36, chairperson of the NFP's ward four, Ulundi, was shot dead on Monday.

Police said Buthelezi was found with a gunshot wound to her body on a gravel road at Stetema Reserve.
