Johannesburg - A man has been arrested for the murder of a woman found dead in a betting office in Pietermaritzburg two years ago, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday.

He was taken into custody last Monday, along with two others, for another crime, Captain Thulani Zwane said.

He and his co-accused allegedly robbed the Maritzburg City Clinic in November. They allegedly held up the clinic staff at gunpoint, demanded keys to the safe and fled with R1 000.

During their arrest an investigating officer, who had worked on a murder case in 2012, recognised one of the arrested men as the man in the identikit compiled for the murder case.

In April 2012, Mogombal Gharib, 43, was found dead in the Tab Gold horse-betting offices on Pietermaritzburg Street, Zwane said. She had been stabbed to death. Her colleague Mavis Myeza, 47, had also been stabbed, but survived.

The attacker fled the scene and an identikit was published.

"He was immediately charged for the murder of Gharib and attempted murder of Myeza," Zwane said on Thursday.

He appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court last Wednesday on armed robbery charges, along with his co-accused Cindy Moodley and Ismail Moosa.

The matter was postponed to Friday. They remained in police custody. Zwane said the man would appear separately on murder and attempted murder charges soon.
