Johannesburg - A man was arrested on Thursday for allegedly assaulting a Johannesburg metro police officer in Midrand, a spokesperson said.
Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the 41-year-old driver of a Toyota Corolla pulled over at the intersection of the R62 and Lever road to ask metro police why they were fining a taxi driver.
A metro police officer told the man he was doing his job as the taxi driver had no permit.
"He then swore at the officer and punched him on his chest. They wrestled on the ground and the female officer came to the rescue of her colleague," said Minnaar.
He said the man was handcuffed and was taken to Midrand police station. The officer he assaulted had neck and chest injuries and was taken to the Milpark hospital.
The arrested man would appear soon in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on a charge of assault.
