Man held for bringing fake cigarettes into SA
Johannesburg - A Zimbabwean man was arrested for the possession of R315 000 worth of contraband cigarettes, the North West police said on Saturday.
Brigadier Thulane Ngubane said the police were tipped off by community members.
The man was arrested on Thursday on the R49 near Zeerust after crossing into South Africa from Botswana at the Kopfontein border post.
"The police drove towards the border post on the lookout for a blue and brown minibus," said Ngubane.
"They intercepted the 30-year-old man, searched the vehicle, found 70 boxes containing counterfeit cigarettes and confiscated them."
The man is in police custody and will appear in the Lehurutshe Magistrate's Court on Monday.
