Johannesburg - A 43-year-old man has been arrested for reporting a false hijacking in Soweto, Gauteng police said on Thursday.

Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said the man told the police his minibus taxi was hijacked on Wednesday morning while he was picking up commuters.

"The taxi was found parked at his home in Zola, when the police followed up on the case. He was arrested and charged with perjury."

Makhubela said the man told the police that three men pointed a firearm at him around 05:00 and drove off in his minibus taxi.

He was expected to appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
