Bethlehem - A 20-year-old Bethlehem man was arrested after falsely claiming he'd been assaulted during a truck hijacking on the N5 near the town, police said on Monday.
Constable Christopher Mophiring said the man was admitted to Dihlabeng Hospital on Saturday claiming he and another man had been hijacked on the road between Bethlehem and Kestell.
"He could not give any description of this man and could not give the registration number of the truck they were driving," Mophiring said.
Police said the Bloemfontein company he said he worked for did not exist.
Mophiring said police had interviewed the man after his discharge from hospital, when he admitted that his allegations of a hijacking were false.
"He was allegedly assaulted at a night club in Bethlehem."
Mophiring said the man was expected to before Bethlehem magistrate's court soon on a charge of defeating the ends of justice.
