Johannesburg - A man has been arrested after he held his 6-year-old niece hostage at gunpoint in Boipatong, near Vanderbijlpark on Saturday, Gauteng police said.

"The man and his wife separated in December after a domestic squabble. He had gone to look for her at her parents' house, but she was not there," said Lieutenant Kay Makhubela.

The man found the niece and her grandmother in the house. He grabbed the little girl, put a gun to her head, and demanded that his wife be brought to him, Makhubela said.

"Hostage negotiators were called in and after a three-hour negotiation, the man released the child unharmed."

He was arrested and charged with kidnapping and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The 34-year-old would appear in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate's Court soon.
