Cape Town - A 40-year-old man was arrested for the illegal possession of hunting rifles in the Western Cape on Sunday, said police.

Captain Frederick van Wyk said they received information of the firearms being stored in a residence at Vanguard Estate.

"On arrival [we] searched the premises and found three hunting rifles wrapped and stored in a shed at the back of the house and a box containing variety ammunition totalling 277 cartridges," said van Wyk.

He said the owner was arrested after he failed to produce a license for the rifles.

"He did not have a valid reason for having the rifles in his possession," said van Wyk.

The man was expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate's Court soon where he would face a charge of possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.
