Letsitsele - A man was arrested on Friday for the murder of his two children in Letsitele outside Tzaneen.
Captain Moatshe Ngoepe said it appeared the 39-year-old unemployed man was upset at not being able to support his daughters, aged one and two.
The man was recently retrenched from his job in Johannesburg.
According to Ngoepe, the man took the girls to a bridge on the Greater Letaba River where he apparently bashed the elder child against the iron railings of the bridge.
He then threw the one-year-old toddler into the water and the infant drowned.
Both bodies were recovered.
Ngoepe said the man had been arrested and would appear in Letsitele magistrate's court on two counts of murder on Monday.
Police were still trying to trace the girls' mother.
