Man held for killing star athlete

2011-07-31 14:31

Port Alfred - A man accused of bludgeoning a former Springbok athlete was expected in court on Monday, Eastern Cape police said.

The 28-year-old would appear in connection with the murder of Louie Zimmerman, 75, in the Port Alfred Magistrate's Court, Captain Mali Govender said on Sunday.

"We worked around the clock ... and looked into information, which led to his arrest on Thursday."

Zimmerman, who was awarded national colours for netball and athletics, and coached marathon runners, was bludgeoned with "a hard object" in her garden on Wednesday. A bicycle, pair of running shoes and a handbag were stolen. She described her assailant to police before she died on arrival at hospital.

The Sunday Times reported her memorial service would be held on Monday.

That is what life is worth.. A bicycle, pair of running shoes and a handbag

      john - 2011-07-31 15:55

Fortunately, the perp's life is worth nothing. Or, at least, it would be fortunate if we were allowed to do to him what he deserves. Unfortunately, we have leaders who believe that we, as taxpayers, should feed and accommodate him for a few years - so that he can be released on parole and do it again.

My reaction, exactly. Often it's a cellphone or even less.

Every murderer caught is one less on the street. Well done boere!

  • ntsiki.mdeni - 2011-07-31 15:08

I thought it's the police that caught him.. Who is the boere?

      Gail - 2011-07-31 15:39

      Boere is slang for police.

      Yoni - 2011-07-31 16:09

No wonder so many police are killed on duty nowadays. It's this "shoot a boer"-song that's been misinterpreted innit?

  • andrew.hartung - 2011-07-31 15:20

Now you see why we have a phobia against them!!

      BOFFINBOB - 2011-07-31 15:26

Which is rapidly turning to hatred. Disgusting, thieving, murdering, overbreeding....scum !

  • vegetarian - 2011-07-31 15:24

Judging by the tone of comments in this forum, there are many potential killers in this country. If you cannot control your tongue, how can you control your hand.

      Hangman - 2011-07-31 15:48

Who cares about the potential killers, when we have real sadistic murderers! When (not if) they appear at your door to rape and bludgeon you to death, lets hope others will not be so crass when you appear as a headline.

      Grant - 2011-07-31 15:48

You can tell that veggie is level headed - she has a huge chip on both shoulders. As for controlling the tongue, this is a case of the pot calling the kettle black you old witch.

      BOFFINBOB - 2011-07-31 15:52

Easy....Fortunately there are a minority who are able to function by using our brains to the best of our ability. The results are great, you should try it. Our forefathers did, hence this countries infrastructure & advancement pre 94. Mind you some people are born unable to advance & think on their feet, but merely to exist in numbers as parasites and are a burden & a drain on society.

  • Grant - 2011-07-31 15:51

Well done to the police on apprehending this cockroach. The courts must now please ensure that it never breathes free air again.

  • Grimaldi - 2011-07-31 15:57

As a Port Alfred local this has been very sad news for me as I have always regarded our community as one of the safest in the country. Well done Mali you have yet again proven that PA has one of the best functioning police units in the country.

  • Dread69 - 2011-07-31 16:16

Is Malema going to demonstrate outside the court and tell the world this guys needs to rot in jail???

      BOFFINBOB - 2011-07-31 16:35

Never !!!!! It's one of his young reveloutionaries that is the perpetrator.

Global trends point to an increase in violent crime. For instance murder rate in New York is five times that of London, which is itself a violent city with its street gangs. South Africa is no exception with its violent past. The otherwise peaceful population was introduced into the most horrendous levels of violence by the previous murderous regime. The leaders of that regime surely need to answer for the current runaway crime levels, it is a pity that some of them are dying peaceful without paying their debts to the suffering South African society. Only a few showed remorse e.g. Vlok washing the feet of Rev. Chikane. The likes of P.W. Botha remained defiant to their last days and are responsible for this violent legacy.

      mozzer - 2011-07-31 18:00

Does being a vegetarian include eating sh1t as a protein substitute? New York's crime rate has dropped dramtically since the 80's. Places that haven't seen a white government for over a generation - e.g Zim - in Africa are even more violent that South Africa. FACT Go munch on some cabbage

      mozzer - 2011-07-31 18:08

oh and the Zulu's were anytyhing but peacful. think your brain may need some protein

      Wonderboy - 2011-07-31 18:32

I wonder if it could not be that the rise in crime in London can be directly related by the rise in immigrants.

      Wonderboy - 2011-07-31 18:34

I seem to think it was the Russians, Chinese and the North Koreans who trained the ANC that turned South Africa into a place of violent crime.

      joe2110 - 2011-07-31 22:20

Which previously murderous regime was that? Shaka's Zulus?

      sbhennops - 2011-07-31 23:53

South Africa is the main contributor to the Global Trend of increased violent crime. Don't point to global trends, its just another excuse not to face up to the facts. South Africa is a crime hub and the world is noticing, and this means tourism will drop and income will get less the more you all bull$h*t yourselves about the reality of the situation. Wake up people crime is a new form of doing bussiness in South Africa as shown by the leadership of various parties and groups. Stay sharp and stay alive. Good luck!!!

      Pierre - 2011-08-01 07:45

I know I am wasting my time here, but just in case somebody is interested in murder numbers closer to fact here goes: 1994/95 - 66 per 100000 (thus situation inherited from Apartheid) 2011 - 37 per 100000 (situation now) This specific source give a reduction of around 50%, but depending on source the reduction varies between 40-50%. (Not justifying murder in any way, just irritated with people justifying Apartheid by falsely claiming things are getting worse, while in reality things are getting better.)

      Tinkie - 2011-08-01 12:09

@ Pierre, maybe you should go back a bit further. Herewith Stats just until 2000 and it has got worse since: According to the HRC statistics, 21,000 people died in political violence in South Africa during apartheid - of whom 14,000 people died during the six-year transition process from 1990 to 1994. Of those deaths, the vast majority, 92%, have been primarily due to Africans killing Africans -- such as the inter-tribal battles for territory: this book's detailed analyses of the period June 1990 to July 1993 indicates a total of 8580 (92%) of the 9,325 violent deaths during the period June 1990 to July 1993 were caused by Africans killing Africans, or as the news media often calls it, "Black on Black" violence - hostel killings, Inkatha Freedom Party versus ANC killlings, and taxi and turf war violence. The activities of the Civil Cooperation Bureau as outlined by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, were also included in these figures. The security forces caused 518 deaths (5.6%) throughout this period. Violent deaths from 1994 to 2000: A total of 174,220 people died violent deaths, from crime-related violence, between 1994 and the year 2000. Currently more people are murdered EVERY YEAR compared to the amount of people that died during the 60 years of the apartheid government's reign. IT WORKS OUT THAT 60 TIMES MORE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN KILLED UNDER THE ANC, which makes them about 60 times as evil.

      Pierre - 2011-08-02 00:38

@ Tinkie: You are making some serious logic errors. People really fanatically want to believe that things are getting worse, in my opinion to justify Apartheid. At some point you will have to be honest. Yes be critical and we can still improve a lot. The current numbers are not great, but only understand this, they are much better than what was handed over by the Apartheids government. The error you were making was to compare deaths, that were classified as political motivated, to the overall number of deaths. That is like comparing number of car accidents due to speeding in one era to all possible types of car accidents in another. Clearly the accidents only due to speed will be lower than the total nr of accidents due to all possible causes (eg. alcohol, road worthy etc.) If you want to focus on political violence, then political violence dropped dramatically after 1994. That is one of the great achievements of the new South Africa. On crime deaths and your 60 times more people that get killed today; I don’t know how you calculated that. Again the crime death rate in 94/95 (at the hand over from Apartheid) was 66 in 100000, now it is 37 in 100000. In actual numbers 94/95 had more than 23000 violent deaths (on a population of 36 million) and in 2010 the actual number is around 18500 (on a population of 50 million). You will notice that even on a larger population today there are less crime deaths.

      safferoverseas - 2011-08-02 01:15

veg, i was willing to give you the benefit of doubt, now i don't think so. the violence was NOT the governments doing, they didn't tell the blacks to necklace people, to kill suspected collaborators, to riot in the townships and burn down anything and everything. it was NOT the government who started killing farmers or people for the sake of a car or a bicycle or a mobile phone. that was the ANC who in it's infinite wisdom told their followers to disobey every law, to disrupt commerce and industry. the very same anc who told their followers not to wear condoms as it was a ploy by the whites to control the black population or that frikkin garlic and beetroot juice will cure aids. it was NOT the government who sang "one boer one bullet". i am in no way condoning apartheid, but please, stop spouting utter trash!

  • Wayne - 2011-07-31 17:35

Another wasted life taken at the hands of the ANC's roving criminal gangs.

  • - 2011-07-31 20:09

KAY FOURS!!!! He should be taken out into the street, impaled on a wooden stake, hung, drawn and quatered, burned in hot oil and his body parts displayed in a steel cage in a public square, not released to family but left to rot, as a stark reminder of what awaits MURDERERS. Watch the crime rate drop overnight.

      ZotBot - 2011-08-01 08:11

Just a few thousand more of these white-murdering racists that need to be exterminated, and we can all go back to living in peace again. The ANCYL are breeding these racist murderers. They need to be stoppped

  • goparty - 2011-07-31 20:58

Is this not what JM should be adressing since is a he is a "youth"!

  • Gibbonater - 2011-08-01 08:28

Another racsist attack under the guise of robbery. Why is this not described as a racsist attack yet the incident in Queenstown which described the race of the alleged perpetrator is branded a race attack. I believe blacks are killing white and the taking a few things to make it look like robbery or do blacks believe that all whites are worth robbing becuase they allegedly have things to steal.
