Welkom - A 31-year-old man was arrested for unlawful possession of gold and impersonating a police officer in Thabong, Free State police said on Wednesday.

The man and two accomplices went into a house on Tuesday pretending to be policemen, produced identification cards and told the house owner they were arresting him, said Inspector Malebo Khosana.

"They ordered him to drive his vehicle to Blenheim Street in Riebeeckstad, while they followed him in two other vehicles."

"Two of the victim's friends who witnessed the incident went to Thabong police station and reported what had just happened," said Khosana.

Police went with them to Riebeeckstad where the suspect was found with the victim, Khosana said.

"The suspect was searched and a piece of gold was found in his possession. He was arrested for impersonating a police officer and possession of gold."

His two accomplices were still at large.

The man was expected to appear in the Welkom Magistrate's Court soon.
