Johannesburg - A 23-year-old man will appear in the Evander Magistrate's Court on Monday for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl, Mpumalanga police said.

He allegedly grabbed her while she was walking to a shop in Embalenhle township near Secunda around 13:00 on Saturday, police spokesperson Bongani Makhado said on Sunday.

"The suspect threatened to harm the girl if she screamed, and dragged her into the room of his home nearby, where he allegedly raped her and ran away.

"The community members found the victim crying in the street a short while later. After telling them what had happened to her, they took her to the police station to open the case."

The alleged rapist was arrested while drinking at a local tavern around 20:00 that day.
