Mbombela - A six year-old girl in Mpumalanga was allegedly raped by her father's cousin on Sunday.

Inspector Andries Skwambane of KaNyamazane Police Station said the alleged perpetrator was well-known to the child.

He said the victim's mother, who sells vegetables at a market, had asked the 22-year-old-suspect to take her daughter home from the market.

"Upon arriving at the home, the suspect saw that there was no one inside the house. He pretended to stay with the victim to keep her company but he ended up raping her before he left," said Skwambane.

When the girl's mother later returned from the market the girl was crying and complained about severe pain in her private parts, especially when she urinated.

"The victim's parents took her to a clinic where medical examinations showed that she had been raped," said Skwambane.

Her parents reported the incident to the police, who arrested the suspect at his house the same night.

"He will appear before KaNyamazane Magistrate's Court soon on charges of rape," said Skwambane.
