Johannesburg - A man was arrested for armed robbery when
his getaway vehicle crashed in Jeppestown on Tuesday, said Johannesburg police.
Police spokesperson Kabelo Marumo said the man and three
accomplices robbed two Chinese nationals of an undisclosed amount of money in
New Doornfontein at 10:00.
The robbers, who were in two cars, forced the foreigners'
car off the road.
The robbers in one of the vehicles drove away.
The others jumped out of their car, held up their victims
at gunpoint and robbed them of two bags, said Marumo.
"A patrol police vehicle appeared while the suspects
were running towards the getaway vehicle, which was identified as hijacked in
January in Cleveland," he said.
A shootout ensued and the getaway car crashed into
oncoming traffic in Jeppestown.
One of the robbers was trapped in the car and was
arrested.
The others fled.
Unlicensed 9mm and 7.65mm pistols were seized and one of
the stolen bags was recovered.
Police believed one of the men was wounded in the
shooting.
"We are still busy with investigations and searching
for the other three," said Marumo.
The arrested man was expected to appear in the
Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
