Durban - A man accused of raping a 91-year-old woman has appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court, the Witness newspaper reported on Tuesday.

This was the fourth reported rape of an elderly woman in as many months in KwaZulu-Natal.

The 36-year-old man appeared in court on Monday and was due back on October 31 for a formal bail application.

The man allegedly gained entry to the woman's home in Hayfields, Pietermaritzburg, on October 5, by threatening her with a hammer.

He allegedly raped her and stole a wristwatch, computer monitor, keyboard, mouse and R300 in cash.

A source close to the investigation told the Witness the man was identified by the victim's gardener on CCTV footage.

"The gardener told us the man, who is from the Edendale area, had been to the victim's home more than once, begging for food and the victim would provide him with food," the source was quoted as saying.

Three elderly women raped in recent months

The man was arrested at a beer hall on Retief Street on Friday. He faces charges of housebreaking with intent to rob, robbery with aggravating circumstances and rape.

Three elderly women have been raped in the province in recent months.

The Witness reported in August that a 60-year-old woman was raped and killed in KwaDambuza, Pietermaritzburg.

The woman's naked body was discovered by residents near a sewage pipe. Her face was severely beaten. Her partner identified the body by her limbs.

A 94-year-old was raped in her home in KwaSwayimani near Wartburg on July 23. A 39-year-old man who was accused of raping her was cleared in court on Monday.

According to the Witness newspaper, DNA test results showed that Ntuthuko Ndlela, 28, was not the assailant but he was still facing a robbery charge relating to another incident.

Another woman, 82, was raped in her house in Swayimane in August. No one has been arrested.
