Pretoria - A Johannesburg man has laid a criminal charge against his employer for calling him a baboon at work in front of other colleagues.

The Sowetan reported that Nhlanhla “Chico” Rikhotso, 39, said he was humiliated when his yard manager at SA French made a joke in Afrikaans to a colleague and then allegedly said: “Hey, what are you doing sitting there on a rock like a baboon?".

Rikhotso said he was deeply upset by the remark. "I was in tears. I felt that this man had disrespected me."

He complained to the company’s executive chairperson but was told there was nothing he could do as yard manager Danie Roos was very valuable to the company and had brought in a great deal of money.

Rikhotso says he is afraid to return to work.

Police confirmed that a complaint of crimen injuria had been laid against Roos.
