Cape Town - A Cape Town man has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for trying to kill his ex-girlfriend and two others by setting them alight, the Cape Argus reported on Wednesday.

The Cape Town Regional Court found that Shaun Jacobs, 33, tried to kill Gasbeyah Abduragmaan because she no longer wanted to date him.

She had reportedly moved in with her friend, but on 11 August last year, Jacobs arrived at their house and said he wanted to speak with her, a request she declined.

According to the report, he returned two hours later with a flammable substance and doused the wooden structure that his ex-girlfriend and her two friends were in with petrol.

The court considered the three counts of attempted murder and one of arson together for the purposes of sentencing, and found that direct imprisonment was the only suitable sentence for someone who had not shown remorse and was arrogant during the trial.
