Cape Town - A man was rescued early on Sunday morning after jumping off a cliff near Gordons Bay, apparently to avoid being arrested, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

According to a local security company the man was involved in an altercation at a petrol station around 05:30, NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said in a statement.

The man, believed to be 35-years-old and from Bellville, Cape Town, fled in his car, with police, traffic services and security guards in pursuit. He hit a few parked cars along the way. The man's car broke down on the R44, which runs along the coast. He then reportedly jumped off the cliff.

"When NSRI Gordons Bay rescuers arrived on the scene the man was a few hundred meters down a cliff on the coast road and needing to be rescued," Lambinon said.

"NSRI rescuers reached the man and managed to bring him safely to the roadway without incident, where police then took the man into custody."

Western Cape police could not immediately be reached for comment.
