Johannesburg - A man was killed and 15 others injured on Saturday when a taxi and bakkie collided on the N2 in the Njoni area on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast, paramedics said.

"[Paramedics] and the Kwadukuza fire services arrived at the scene and found some of the people still trapped in the mangled wreckage of the taxi," Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

"After the patient was extricated using the Jaws of Life and all the injured were stabilised on scene, medics transported them to various hospitals in the area for the care that they required."

The driver of one of the cars died shortly after reaching hospital.

The accident happened around 11:30, said Botha.

The cause of the accident was unknown.
