Johannesburg - A 45-year-old man was shot dead during a robbery at his home in Blairgowrie, Gauteng police said on Sunday.
Captain Cynthia Magoai said four armed suspects entered his house late on Saturday night.
The man, who'd already been sleeping, was woken by noise from the kitchen.
"When he spotted the robbers, he tried to press the panic button. When the suspects saw him do that, they shot him in his chest once," she said.
They fled, taking a laptop, cellphone and wallet.
"That was all they took, nothing else," said Magoai.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said when paramedics arrived at the scene, they found the man's wife frantically trying to administer CPR on her husband.
"Paramedics worked fervently for about 30 minutes to try and resuscitate the critically wounded man, but he died on scene."
No one else was injured during the incident.
