Man killed in North West accident

2012-05-02 16:39
Johannesburg - A man was killed and four others were injured after a bakkie rolled outside Potchefstroom, in the North West on Wednesday, paramedics said.

"The one ton bakkie, with five men on board, is believed to have been travelling towards Brits when the driver suddenly lost control," said ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson in a statement.

Bystanders indicated the bakkie rolled off the road, having not collided with another car or object. The accident took place at about 09:30 on the R501, about 15km outside Potchestroom.

Paramedics found the bakkie badly damaged in the long grass on the side of the road, lying on the driver's side.

The five occupants were found outside the bakkie. The two men on the back were flung from the bakkie as it overturned and the three men in the cabin had climbed out after it had come to a stop.

One of the men lying near the wreckage was declared dead on the scene. He had succumbed to his injuries.

The remaining men were treated on the scene for moderate to serious injuries, before they were taken to the Potchefstroom provincial hospital by ambulance.
