Johannesburg - One person was killed and two others seriously injured when two cars collided on Thursday morning, on the N2 highway near the King Shaka Airport near Durban, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the car and bakkie were travelling in the same direction when the driver of the bakkie lost control of his vehicle.

"The bakkie collided with a lamp pole before overturning. It rolled several times before colliding with a car and coming to rest on its roof," said Botha.

"Paramedics arrived and found the driver of the bakkie still trapped in the mangled wreckage of the bakkie, tragically he died on scene due to the extensive injuries that he sustained."

Botha said the two people in the other car were treated on the scene before they were transported to hospital.
