Bloemfontein - A robber was killed and a security guard wounded in a foiled robbery in central Bloemfontein on Tuesday, police said.
Superintendent Annelie Wrensch said three security guards were on their way to refill an automatic teller machine (ATM) in Fichardt Street in the CBD when three armed men began shooting at them from an alley.
"In the shoot-out that followed, one of the suspects was fatally wounded in the head and one of the security guards was wounded in the face."
Wrensch said the wounded guard was taken to hospital for treatment.
Police said the remaining two suspects fled in a bakkie from the scene without the money.
Police said the bakkie, reported stolen in Pretoria West last month, was later found abandoned behind the Pelonomi Regional Hospital in the city.
