Durban - A domestic dispute led to the death of a 38-year-old KwaZulu-Natal man during Christmas celebrations, police said on Thursday.
Captain Khephu Ndlovu said the incident took place at an informal settlement in Umlazi's Q section.
"An engaged couple had been arguing and their 14-year-old son had been watching," said Ndlovu.
The man apparently took a broken liquor bottle and was about to hit his girlfriend with it, when their child intervened.
"He was trying to help his mother and pushed them...the father fell to the ground and the bottle struck him on the head," he said.
The man was taken to Prince Mshiyeni Hospital where he later died.
A case of murder is being investigated but no arrests have been made.
