Cape Town - A man was arrested on Thursday morning for allegedly killing his wife, niece and two children in Khayelitsha, Western Cape police said.
Lieutenant Colonel Andr Traut said residents handed the man, 25, over to police following the discovery of the murders in ST Block, Harare, at about 01:30.
"It is believed that the deceased were asleep when the husband started attacking them. The bodies of the wife, 29, niece, 18, and little girl, 3, were found in the main bedroom and the boy, 4, found in the kitchen where he apparently tried to escape."
A knife and spade, possibly the murder weapons, were found on the scene.
The man was admitted to hospital as he allegedly tried to commit suicide by drinking battery acid.
